Greetings all Arizona Health and Physical Education members,

I know by now everyone is back in school and hopefully has been able to find a rhythm. I know for me things are slowly starting to settle down, but who knows what the next few months will bring. I know!!! CONVENTION!!!

The AzHPE convention team has been hard at work preparing for what I think is going to be an extraordinary professional development! We are so excited to have the opportunity to host a live, in-person convention starting on Tuesday, November 2 when we will have two fabulous half-day workshops. The morning starts with Maria Corte from Mesa High School who will be presenting her secondary physical education curriculum featuring ways of making fitness fun and engaging. This session will be an action-packed experience as we look back on what we did before the pandemic, as well as where we are going moving into the future.  You will leave this session with several effective K-12 activities and management strategies using all teaching models! Don’t miss out on this Back to the Future Experience!

In the afternoon, Dr. Aaron Bieghle from the University of Kentucky (and an ASU grad!) will be presenting an awesome elementary workshop on Dynamicpeasap.com, assessments, instructional materials, quick activities, teaching practices, games, and much more will be used to demonstrate ways to create your safe and fun culture for all students. You will leave this session not only with ideas to get back to normal but ideas to get “BACK TO BETTER THAN NORMAL.” Make sure to register for one or both of these fabulous 2 ½ hour workshops. You will NOT be disappointed!

The following two days (November 3-4) will be packed with close to 50 different sessions with everything from ALLBall to weight/resistance training for our physical education students. Below is just a sample of the fun sessions for you to choose from:

AND SO MUCH MORE!!!!!

Our Keynote speaker this year is none other than Dr. Bob Pangrazi!! Dr. Pangrazi is a Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University and an Educational Consultant for Gopher Sport. Dr. Pangrazi has been in the education field for over 50 years. He began his career as a 5th-grade teacher and was an ASU professor of physical education for 32 years. Pangrazi has published over 60 textbooks and 100 research and professional articles. He has been an invited speaker at nearly 500 national and international conferences.

And our distinguished Scholar Lecture is Dr. Ben Sibley from Appalachian State University. Dr. Sibley will be presenting some exciting information about motivation and CrossFit!  What can we, as physical educators, apply from the CrossFit world in our physical education classrooms to motivate students to participate, challenge themselves, and take ownership of their health and fitness?

And do not forget about all Convention Social on Wednesday, November 3rd, at Majerle’s Sports Grill, located at 24 North 2nd Street in Phoenix, starting at 5 pm! This is within walking distance from the convention center and if this event is anything like our past socials, there will be some fun and shenanigans! Once you register for the convention you will receive an email to register for the social.

Again, the date for the convention is November 2-4th, 2021 and you all will have access to the Justification Toolkit to attend the Arizona Health and Physical Education Convention. This toolkit will have all the information you need to make the case to attend, including a justification letter to send to your administrator. Registration for the convention includes your choice of over 45 engaging sessions along with several new and encore virtual sessions from the convention last year.

I am sincerely hoping everyone will have the opportunity to register and come to the convention this year! The last 18 months for EVERYONE has been a real rollercoaster, both professionally and personally. I want this convention to be extraordinary and with you there, it will be!!!

Be well and stay safe!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Houston
