Honor and Recognition Awards

Eligibility Requirements
Educators who meet the eligibility requirements and exemplify the criteria for these awards may apply or be nominated by a colleague. A "teacher" is an individual whose primary teaching responsibility is in Health, Physical Education or Administration.

Additional requirements include:

  • Current membership in Arizona Health and Physical Education
  • Holds a current certification as a teacher.
  • Full-time teaching contract, current at the time of nomination and selection at the highest level;
  • Minimum of 60% of total teaching responsibility in their teaching field/grade level.

With a commitment to individualized instruction, creative adaptations, and continuous innovation, this educator ensures that every student can succeed, building confidence, skills, and a lifelong appreciation for movement.

Dr. Sean Jonaitis - Administrator of the Year

ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR

Dr. Sean Jonaitis has shown steadfast dedication to ensuring that physical education remains a respected and supported part of their school community. By protecting PE enrollment, maintaining safe facilities, and keeping class sizes manageable, they have created an environment where quality instruction and strong student–teacher relationships can thrive. Their support extends to welcoming outside partnerships, from professional sports organizations to guest instructors, enriching the program with diverse experiences for students. Dr. Jonaitis also prioritizes professional development and provides the resources and flexibility teachers need to succeed. Thanks to this administrator’s leadership, physical education is never treated as secondary—it is valued equally alongside all academic subjects, ensuring students have the best opportunities for growth, activity, and lifelong health.

HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER OF THE YEAR

The High School Teacher of the Year Award is presented to Steve Schween, who’s innovative, data-driven, and student-centered approach to physical education has redefined excellence at the high school level. By combining cutting-edge training methods, recovery strategies, and critical thinking opportunities, this educator equips students with the tools to thrive both athletically and personally, ensuring they leave school with the knowledge and confidence to lead active, healthy lives.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER OF THE YEAR

The Middle School Teacher of the Year Award is presented to Nataly Van Alstine, who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and creativity in delivering a diverse and comprehensive physical education program. With a focus on student growth, teamwork, and inclusivity, this educator has fostered an environment where middle school students not only develop essential skills but also build confidence, resilience, and a love for lifelong physical activity.

ELEMENTARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Their passion, creativity, and commitment to growth make them an inspiring representative of the next generation of physical educators.

Darren Hill

INA E. GITTINGS FOUNDER'S AWARD

The Ina E. Gittings Founder’s Award honors individuals whose leadership, vision, and service leave a lasting impact. This year’s recipient has been a cornerstone of their school community for decades. They teach, coach, mentor, and advocate tirelessly, ensuring every student has access to physical activity, athletics, and wellness education. Darren Hill shares best practices, mentors new teachers, and organizes free weekend athletic programs for students and families. Their work ensures equity, accessibility, and engagement for all learners. The legacy of Mr. Hill inspires both students and colleagues alike.
