Back-to-School, Back-to-Standards!

It’s that time! Most Arizona schools start back in late July or early August. Usually, health and physical education teachers start thinking and planning long before that about how to implement a curriculum that is appropriate and motivating for students. It is a given that we do not just show up and teach. Lesson plans and curriculum have a variety of structure and components. Sadly, something that is left out by many teachers is state and national standards.

According to the Arizona Department of Education, the overarching goal of school health and physical education in Arizona is to ensure that school-aged youth become physically literate individuals who possess the skills, knowledge, and dispositions to lead physically active lives.

Arizona has both Health and Physical Education Standards. SHAPE America has both Health and Physical Education Standards along with Adapted Physical Education, Dance Education and Sport Coaching Standards.

Arizona Health and Physical Education is your state resource for standards. Contact us with questions on how to implement standards and how to promote them in your schools and district.
